Dementia occurs as a set of related symptoms when the brain is damaged by disease. The symptoms involve progressive impairments to memory, thinking, and behavior, that affect the ability to perform everyday activities. Other common symptoms include emotional problems, difficulties with language, and decreased motivation. Dementia is not a disorder of consciousness, and consciousness is not usually affected. A diagnosis of dementia requires a change from a person's usual mental functioning, and a greater cognitive decline than that due to normal aging.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), also referred to simply as Alzheimer's, is a neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gradually worsens over time. It is the cause of 60–70% of cases of dementia. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events. As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, self-neglect, and behavioural issues. As a person's condition declines, they often withdraw from family and society.
